I've had an angelfish for about a month now.. he's not the best feeder. He'll just pick at flake food, and not bother at all with cichlid pellets.
For the past week I've been feeding him separately on frozen shrimp and he'll take that fairly readily.

Heres a pic of him..he looks healthy to me but I don't know I'm just not totally sure.

Can anyone recommend what to do, or recommended foods?

Also I'm wondering what strain and sex he/she is?

Thanks in advance,

Axy!

Have you got any more photos?

It's either a very nice scalare or an altum.

I'd be somewhat surprised if you've acquired an altum without knowing about it, but I can't get a good enough view of the front end to be sure.

Sexing angelfish is a nightmare, there are ways of doing it but the most reliable is that the ones that lay eggs are female. Otherwise it is a pain to do, there are ways of playing with hormones to get to see the sexual characteristics but it's still an art form.

Cheers for the response.. here is another photo..I made sure I got him from the LFS it was the best pattern I saw!

I think he's a male but that is based on a little post I read somewhere.. just wondering if anyone had a keen eye for sexing!

Do you have any ideas for feeding, I know I can't feed him purely on frozen shrimp/bloodworm

I have 2 different angles and they both eat very well but differently 1 will mostly eat at the surface and the other will generally eat from the floor. I think it's the fishes own habit. If he dosnt eat properly try not feeding for 24hrs then again. Could be constipated, not hungry or like I said its just the way it is.

No, I think it's just a very nice scalare.

They can be a pain for eating when they're first moved, they learn after a while where the food comes from.

If it's picking at flake food, keep going with that, it'll eat it eventually.

I could guess at the sex, but I'm not basing it on anything useful, as I said, they're a pain to sex. I've put pairs in tanks in my time and both of them have laid eggs.

Would an angel eat a pea, I've heard thats good for constipation or is there anything else that is good for it? I'll fast him for a day and try him again thanks. He must be eating something at least as I do see him pecking around the tank sometimes!

I actually stumbled across what type he is.. I think its a zebra angelfish :)

I really fancy getting another angelfish they're great characters. But I don't know if, I accidentally got two males, whether they would fight in a tank my size??

Thanks for the responses!

I hear that fasting fish once a week is good (not 100% sure) but it won't be bad to do this now for a day.

There are people on here who know a lot about angles and I frequently see that you could have 2, I have 2, don't know the sex of them and they are fine always together. You will get problems with odd numbers and if any don't pair they will get bullied.

Zebra simply refers to the stripe pattern. There are lots of names for the scalare variations.

They'll eat shelled peas, generally. I've rarely had big problems with angels and constipation.

Angels are best kept singly, in good sized groups (at least 6) or in pairs.

Unpaired individuals can get on, it depends on a lot on the fish involved. I've had females that wouldn't tolerate others just as much as males. How big is the tank?

Oh right thanks. Right plan is to starve him a for a day, try some flakes if he doesn't eat it i'll try some peas. The tank is 52 gallon. 100 cm long. Here is the tank:

I've got some tall plants still growing in, I know they like these cover.

Would this tank be too small?

Thanks!
