Hey guys,
As many of you may know i am getting a 50 gallon saturday whoo-hoo! I am a newbie but as i said i consider myself a "responsible newbie" because i like to know as much i can about the fish and their requirements before i buy anything. I am shocked and kinda dsigusted when i read a bunch of newbie post who just bought fish they saw without knowing anything about them..that said heres my deal

i am going to add the following:
6+ glass catfish
6+ boesmani rainbowfish
pair of german blue ram cichlids
butterfly fish
bristlenose pleco
moolight gourami
Ottos (probably some cories if i have room, i love em)
amano shrimp

I have researched and found care on most but need help with:
A. What species of butterfly fish is reccomended for my tank size and tank mates? How should i care for it (maybe a helpful link?)
B.Would like a little more info on the birstlenose pleco...
C. i have heard ottos can "suck" on slow moving fish such as discus, is this true and if so will this be a problem if i do get a moonlight gourami?

Thanks to all that reply...please help me take care of these fish properly! :good:

one more thing....dont worry i dont plan on adding these all at once! i will make sure the tank is cycled and add fish slowly as i know this is where most beginners make mistakes. I cant wait, my girlfriend got me a 10 gallon and ever since then i have been addicted to the hobby and this forum...you guys are great!

Here is some help hopefully on your Bristlenose Pleco. Don't be afraid to check out the Catfish section of the forum as there is an insider Pleco forum there! It has lots of advice and i'm sure you could get more help down in that forum too on the Bristlenose Pleco.

INFO LINK

Bristlenose Pleco can grow up to 6inches. They like bogwood and planted tanks. Males are the ones with the bristles on their noses.

Good Luck! Nice job on the researching!!

I have had ottos in with 4 different kind of Gourami now and never noticed anything like them sucking on slow moving fish. What you may be referring to is some plecs can suck on the side of the Discus for the mucus they have for their fry. Maybe this is wht you are getting mixed up with? If so it isnt that they are slow moving, it is for the slime, which other slow moving fish like Gouramis dont have. You will be fine with a Moonlight an ottos.

Yes i have heard that about plecos but i am actually referring to ottos. nmonks has confirmed this to me stating he has witnessed his ottos sucking on the sides of his discus fish and he advised me not to mix ottos with gouramis because of this. i will probably head his advice. i was really shocked to hear this but i trust neale. thanks for all your input and advice. i will let you know for sure what i decide to get. :good:
