My discus has a white cottony growth on one of his dorsal 'quills'. I had got him to the point of being healthy, after what seemed like some kind of parasitic infestation. But, this could be a secondary bacterial infection or a fungus. What's the safest wasy to treat it, keeping in mind that I have no quaranteen option???

wats in tank at the moment?

wats water stats?

were discus wormed?

The PH is about 6.4, the temp is about 82-83 degrees. I don't belive the fish was wormed. My water is good quality, and the tank is planted. I perform 3-4 30 percent water changes per week. I had treated the tank with an antiparasitic, and the discus started looking better. The discus eats well. His colors have gotten better, but this 'fungus' just recently appeared. Also, there are some white things within it's gills, and the scales near one of his gills seem to be damaged a little. Sorry if I can't giv better info...new to discus.

To add, it's a 55 gallon planted tank with discus, rams, guppies, a gold nugget, a golden algae eater, giant danios (I know), black neons....

what is ur ammonia,no2,no3?

Ammonia and nitrites are 0...nitrates are quite low. Too low for my plants, probably. I brought this discus home, knowing he wasn't healthy, simply because I got him for next to nothing. My water quality is very good. He had been getting better. He started with parasites, after having been successfully treated for ick by the LFS, yet his poop was white, suggesting internal parasites. I medicated the tank conservatively, with antiparasitic. Things had been good....my plan was to do 30-40 percent water changes on Saturday, Sunday, and Wednesday, but from Wednesday to today, he developed a white cotony growth on his dorsal fins. I am treating with Kordon Organic Ick treatment now, which is supposed to target parasites AND fungus. I don't want to use any real meds if I can help it. I think he also may have gill flukes, but I don't have any experience with them.

What med have you used for the internal parasites.
Can you describe the white things on the gills.
For the cotton fungus on the fins just pimafix, you can use pimafix with parasite meds.

I used modest dosages of jungle labs parasite clear or something like that (Pet Supermarket - few good options here in my town). I am now dosing a Kordon Ick product (organic). The white things on insi of the gills might be normal, or not. They look white to yellowish, and when I look toward the inside of the gills I see white dots near the opening/gill slits, which don't look as round as a true dot. Next to one of his gills, he appears to have a blemish as if he lost a scale. What worries me is that the color of this 'blemish' is similar to what I see inside the gills. I am sorry if I am not describing it well...that is the best I can do. Again, I don't know if the gills are abnormal. He seems to be gasping a bit, but I am not sure if it is more shallow and rapid than normal. I just did a 40 percent water change. I'll do one again Tomorrow. What I do know for sure is that there is a fungus attached to his fins.

White dots can be whitespot, white specs can also be gill flukes.
So you are using a whitepot med anyway.
is it possible to load a pic up onto the site.

Sounds like you are dealing with a parasite.
Any signs of flicking and rubbing.

Take a look here to see if anything matches up.

Thanks for your feedback. I am pretty sure it is a parasite. They are more like specs. I will continue to use the organic parasite measure, and I just brought home the med you suggested (pimafix), which appears to be safe for everything in my tank. Again, thank you mate.

Just makes sure its not flukes then.
