I have got a 90g tank and lately i have been look at some discus. I would really like these fish but wondered what they can be kept with as i dont like the idea of a single species tank. Also how much harder are they to look after? My current stock is 4platys, 5 guppies, 6 neon tetras and 2 angel fish. Will they live with any or all of these happily?

Cheers guys

They should, but those neon's are bound to be eaten by the angels or the discus. You could probably get 7 or so discus for that tank. Discus perfer warmer water's, and species like coriies do very well with them.

I thought that about the tetras when i bought the angels but the guy in my lfs said that if i get the tetras while the angels are small then they will not eat them? Don't know if this is true. What extra do you have to do on the care side of things for discus if i was to add them to my current community? How many should i add at a time and how will i know my tank is ok to add them?

There's a lot of conflicting information with regards to Angels and Tetras. Some say that the Angels will be fine whilst they are small, but WILL eat the Tetras once they mature.

I think a general rule with keeping fish is to be aware that if a fish can fit inside the mouth of another... don't keep them together!

If discus and angels are grown up in the same tank as tetras, they will not see them as food. For that tank I would say to get 5 discus. I am going to be setting up a 90 for discus, and thought about angels, but opted against them as they are a bit too eccentric for discus.

I'd be interested to hear, first hand, tales of this happening. I'm not calling you a liar, because I too have heard of this. But it always seems to be someone just reiterating something they have heard, rather than experienced.

If it is genuinely the case, then I'd love to add some baby Angelfish to my Tetra tank.

I have never had any bother with my angels and tetras when i had them. I know have discus and angels and they swim together most of the time. Only problem i have had is that my angels spawned for the first time causing havoc.

Do your research on the discus though mate. They can be slightly more work than the fish you are used to.

Goodluck with the new tank

How so?

They cant handle any nitrates( you should aim for 15 or under). You probably need 20% a day fro the young ones. Also, need alot of protein in their diet.

I've got discuss in a very mixed tank with some very active fish and i think it helps to bring the discuss out of there shell a bit and make them more active, one thing to be careful of is some cat fish with discuss, can stress your discuss as they sleep on the bottom the catfish are very busy at night and can disturb there sleep, but i've never had any issues keeping pleco's and talking catfish with them.
