Turned his basement into a tank, pretty well; pacus and fly river turtles and alligator gars. He dons his swimming trunks (and a weight belt) to clean the glass and refilling after a water change takes 6 hours. Acess to the tank is through a hole taken up in the front room floor, under the bay window :hyper:
Apart from being absolutely amazing, the usefulness of this article struck me at once. How many spouses do you suppose are at this very moment shoving that magazine under the noses of their recalcitrant partners, going: "Look at this! And you complain about a titchy little 6 foot tank! You consider yourself lucky!"

*raises hand!*

A guy in Canada built a 50,000 Gallon tank as an extension to his house. That took something like 7 days to fill or drain. He even managed to keep Arapaima gigas in it.

Even more sickening, the same bloke also has a 15,000 gallon tank and a t least 4 or 5 normal tanks over the 200 gallon mark, and possibly many more.

The downside to making a basement a tank is the evaporation tends to destroy the house from the inside out.

Just read a thread HERE about a guy and his 50,000 gallon tank.

I've recently been dreaming about massive tanks in which I could don scuba gear and go swimmming with my fish!!

I am guessing that the link breaks the forum rules and a mod has edited it.
Nope - certain forums automatically appear xxxx instead of the name. Same as swear words etc. ;)

I'm yet to open my PKF subscription that came last week  this week's been a tad busy !! but look forward to reading the article on the weekend

6 hours is a long time lol. Also would it stress the fish swimming with them?

Well, it's how they do clean these megatanks, same in The Deep in Hull- they send down divers. I suppose, as they say, worse things happen at sea  In the wild, pacus might well expect to share their bath water with otters and capybaras and the occasional jaguar.

The main thing that gets my about the guy with the basement tank, other than that it's 12'6" x 12'8" x 7' (at the deepest point) and holds 4,000g(!!!), is that it cost him a grand total of £700 for the glass panels and £800 for the fibreglass!

I know people that have spent £800+ on a normal 6' set up. :S

I'm not even sure you can say he built the tank in his basement, seeing as 3 walls of the tank are in fact the houses' foundations.... seems that the tank is his basement. I didn't see anything about damp, though I'm sure it must still be an issue.

He did say that he will build his next tank and build the house on top rather than having to knock out basement. Probably better to sort any damp issues then and also..... he can make it bigger!! :fun:

i found the forum with the 50,000 gallon tank

I loke how the guy had a freaking construction crew and then says "I had to do it on a budget so it is not fancy like a public Aquarium"

yeah, like you build an extension to your houe for the sole purpose of having a mega aquarium in it, and you do it on a budget... I would never do that unless I had more money to spend then i had time to count!

The sheer physics of the project would scare most people. something like 18 tonnes of pressure at the bottom of the viewing glass when the tank is full! At least the walls of the foundations can't bow out.

At least contained in the basement, the fish would probably survive if there was a leak. It would just run out to a level, leaving some water in the tank until the leak could be fixed.

yeah it looks absolutely awesome doesn't it!

i'm sooo jealous.

nice to see pacu's and pangasius cats actually having the room to be happy for once. :)
