Not really an emergency, as it's a bit late for that, but what happened?

Ok, so today I thought I would give my fish a treat and get out a block of the frozen daphnia from the freezer.
I carved off a little and but it in with my fry, and the rest of the 'lump' went in with my other fish, gradually moving round in the water flow, breaking up and releasing daphnia as it went, (but the 'lump' was largely ignored by the fish).
All seemed happy chasing around the daphnia and eating well, so I left them to it.

Then about an hour later I found one of my albina cory's floating upside down at the top of the tank :(

Pictures are below, but basically it seems to be very red in the abdominal area and the belly is really swollen, and what I'm guessing is the anus looks very red too...
Looks like almost some kind of internal heamorage, and I'm guessing whatever has bloated it abdomen is alos why it floated, (rather than sinking).

I'm just wondering if it's just unfortunate conincidence, or could it have died from stuffing itself with Daphnia (not that theres anything I could have done to avoid it)?
I think the red it's belly might be blood, but it could also be a massive amount of daphnia?

Any thoughts most welcome :)

How had he been beforehand?

I wouldn't have thought he could have eaten enough to kill him almost instantly with the other fish taking their share.

How are the other fish? Do they seem bloated and lethargic at all?

As far as I could tell, everyone was fine before hand, but I didn't actually 'count' the fish, but I'm pretty sure I would have noticed him if he was there before hand as I had the tank top off to put the daphnia in.

All the other fish seem ok at the moment (I'm keeping my fingers crossed), no idea what has happened :(

Do you know if he had been behaving oddly? Flicking? Lethargy?

I know with Corys it's not easy to tell a flick from a dance but it's possible he may have picked up some kind of infection.

Have you changed anything in the tank in the last week or so? New plants? New rocks or wood? New stock?

Fish can get food poisoning but i would of expected more ill fish.
How are the other fish now.

Nope, nothing new added, nothing different, just the frozen daphnia added.

All other fish seemed fine at last check, (if a little sleepy now that the lights are out :) )

It just totally threw me, so sudden, and such an obvious distorition to the poor thing too. I've had fish die before, but had no idea what caused it, no external signs etc. I've also had fish die that have had infections that have been treated over a few days, but never anything like this...

Did you notice any bloating before the septicemia happended.
Bless him R.I.P.

Can't say that I did. As far as I remember from looking in the tank, (not STUDYING each fish), all seemed fine and dandy.
It's a real mystery to me, and perhaps one that won't be solved. Perhaps it was just his time, but it didn't seem like a very fun way to go with the look of him :(

I doubt is was the daphnia if the other fish are ok.

Its best to totally defrost the daphnia before adding it to the tank, if it was eaten frozen it may have done some damage

It maybe would of caused and upset stomach but I doubt it would kill the fish.
I always defrost mine before I add it to the tank.

:( I did ask here how I was supposed to feed frozen foods before I did it as I'm new to them, but the response seemed to be mixed. I figured I'd try putting it in frozen so that it would 'slow' release into the water. Although to be honest that didn't work well anyway as it seemed to all defrost quickly, but stay clumped together.
Whether it was or wasn't the food that killed the fish, I'm definitly defrosting the next block :good:

Good luck with the rest of the fish.
I would of said the cory was already ill.
Corys are quite prone to bacterial infections that why its so important to hoover your gravel once a week.

Daphnia usually have eggs inside them, they are usually green.
Another suggestion: it could be a blood clot...
Whilst chasing the Daphnia, it could of ingured itself
