Hi, I bough 6 spotted rasboras at the weekend but one's dead already!! :(

I noticed in the shop that there was one in the tank that looked like it was dead - floating on it's back but every now and then it would start swimming! It was clearly having trouble keeping itself upright though. So i asked the man in the lfs if he knew what was wrong with it - he said probably a problem with its swim bladder and that it wouldn't have infected the other fish (which seemed tru - everyone else was active and i didnt notice any of them having trouble swimming or staying upright). So (stupidly or not) ... i bought 6 and specifically asked (obviously) not to have the poor little one that was dying. anyway i took them home and the next morning i noticed that one of them was floating around on his back but still alive and swimming arund upside down!

He has since died! :( but now im wondering whether it was just bad luck and i ended up with the poorly one from the eank or whether its something a bit more i should be a bit more worried about??

Thanks

Swimbladder problems can be caused by numerous things, they are generally not infectious but it completely depends on what caused the swimbladder problem in the first place, such problems can be caused by internal infections, digestion related problems, direct physical damage to the swimbladder to water quality problems etc...

Can you give us more info on your situation in as much detail as posible;

a. How did you go about acclimatising the fish to the tank exactly and how long for?
b. What other fish do you have in the tank and how many?
c. How long has the tank been set up for and how did/are you cycling it?
d. How long were the fish in the petshop for before you bought them (i.e. did they arive the very same day, a week before, 2das before etc)?

ok ....

a. I acclimatised the fish for about an hour-ish. open up the bag and put it in the tank (with the tank lights out) and every about 15 mins remove some of the bag water with a cup and replace it with about the same amount of tank water. After about an hour netted the fish out of the bag and into the tank. leave the lights out for about half hour after iv put them in the tank.

b. one honey gourami and one male betta

c. the tank's only been set up about 3 weeks. I was cycling it with ammonia but had to add the honey gourami after a week because of problems with him in the main tank. but ammonia and nitrite readings were at zero when i added him and have remained so since.

d. the fish had been in the pet store at least a couple of weeks.
