I'm currently at the end of my second week of fishless cycling. My ammonia level drops to 0 every day but my nitrites are stuck at 1.6ppm for the last 4 days after peaking at 3.3ppm for a day. Is this normal??

Secondly, I am getting a brown algae forming on the glass of the tank and it also seems to be forming on a lot of the larger leaved plants. What is this algae?? Is it going to cause issues with the plants or cycling?? How do I get rid of it....more faster growing plants????

Thanks in advance

A chart to show how my levels have progressed....nitrate has been at, at least 110ppm since the nitrite spike.

Your readings look fine.

The algae is diatoms which are capitalising on the sudden burst of nirAtes. They're very normal in a new set up and should disappear of their own accord or failing that a plec / oto will would eat them once the tank is cycled.

Thanks for the help...

Does anyone know why my plants are going brown also?? Is the diatoms causing them problems??? I say this as they don't look that great.

Some plants don't fair well in a cycling tank for numerous reasons and ideally I think should be added once it's finished. I also added my plants before cycling but only had problems with my twisted vallis. It all depends what species you have. The ones in my signature are supposed to be fairly bomb proof but not knowing what you have I cant offer any more advice than that.
