My platy Luther came down with the dreaded dropsy. Luckily I caught it very early. I noticed he had got very bloated suddenly and was hiding. The next day he didn't eat so I knew something was wrong. The day after, I saw a couple of scales on one side sticking out. I feared the worst for him as I read that dropsy is mostly deadly.

Wilder suggested giving him a salt bath, so gave hima 15 min slat bath. When he went back in the tank, he wasn't as bloated and his scales had gone down. Gave hm another one and now he is back to normal. He is swimming and eating and seems back to normal this morning!!! :hyper:

good news :good:

HOORAY!

Well done! I lose one of my fish to dropsy, didnt know a salt bath would help!!

Thanks guys! I'm so pleased. Seeing him swimming around like normal today is brill! He is one of my original fish that survived the tank cycle - didn't know about fishless cycling at the time!

Qays - Apparently the salt draws out the fluid from the fish - I did 4 tspns in 1 gal of tank water. Wilder suggested it and it was almost instant. I don't know if only certain fish can tolerate it though. And I think it only works if you catch it early. He only had a couple of scales sticking out on one side. If it had been both sides I don't think he would have made it.

Dropsy cures depend on the underlying caused- salt baths may help is there is fluid in the body, but it won't help much if it's caused by organ faliure. But well done :)

If it was down to organ failure, he wouldn't have perked up so much would he? He's eating and chasing the others about today so I'm pretty sure I got it? I guess I'll only really know over the next few days but he really does look ok now!

I didn't say the platy has organ faliure, I was just saying that someone who reads this shouldn't be upset if a salt bath has no effect
