i am testing the effect on kh, gh, and ph of crushed coral on a bucket of dechlorinated tap water.

does the coral raise the kh instantly once it's put in the water, or slowly over time?

i'm asking because it took 2 tsp of coral to raise my kh by 0.5, from 2 to 2.5. but i now have 8 tsp of coral in the bucket and kh is still 2.5.

If it's rinsed thoroughly before being placed in the water (has no dust or really small particles) it should be a change that occurs over the course of a couple days gradually. It's just the dissolving of the coral's chemical composition into the water. Eventually the coral will be completely gone, but this would take several years, maybe a decade; so the dissolving process of coral is very slow.

why do i have to rinse the crushed coral for it to raise kh?
