I got this cory from my lfs and have been trying to ID it ever since we got home! It doesn't look like a panda cory b/c of the spots. It doesn't look like a leopard cory b/c of the black stripe down over the eye.

I've seen about a bazillion cory pics but just can't find my guy.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Hi parker313 :)

Aside from some that are relatively common and often tank raised, corys are not the easiest fish to identify. Let me give you some references and see if that helps.

Have you looked at this list? It's our primary source for identifying corys.

http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/calli...ra/g_thumbs.htm

If you have, and don't see your fish, here's the listing of the corys that have not yet been given latin names. If you bought your cory from a chain store, it might be one of these.

If you can narrow your choices to a few of the named species, we might be able to help by eliminating some of the more hard to find ones.

Too cool. I did not get the cory from a chain - he was at my lfs. I had 2 skunk (arcuatus) cories, but one was the victim of a nasty bucktooth tetra. The tetras went back and I got 2 cories - an albino and my mystery guy.

OK - from planetcatfish:
leucomelas - I think this *has* to be it. I guess I just kinda skipped over this one when I was looking before b/c it didn't have a common name. I guess I just figured that the most common species would have a common name!

Now that I've got the latin name to search with, I've also seen them referred to as a Blackfin Cory. I realized that I had stumbed on this species looking around earlier, but the picture that they had on their site had much fewer spots than mine so I discounted it

That looks about right though it's hard to tell. It could also almost pass as a Trinelatus (sp?) or julii. That's the one thing with Cories, so many of them it's hard to figure out what you have sometimes.

I know, I didn't get that great of a picture. Right after I snapped the shot, the tank lights went out and I didn't want to bother with turning it on manually b/c I would have had to reset my whole timer.

julii - The julii doesn't have the black mask like mine does.

Actually, the trilineatus doesn't either.

There are a lot of cories! I hadn't realized how many there were til I started trying to figure mine out :p

I know they don't, but otherwise they look exactly alike and with the shadowing in the face they could be mistaken for one. When I was trying to track down what ones I had when I got some Schwartzi's, it took going through the entire catalog to pin down what ones they were.

Schwartzi's were another one that temporarily crossed my "might be" list
