I noticed that the cories at the pet store sleep in a "pile". Mine do not do this and I'm wondering if it is because they are different kinds. I have 1 albino, 2 bronze, 1 julii, and 1 peppered. The bronze cories stay together but the others are kinda spread out. If I trade in the julii and the peppered one for albinos will they be more likely to pile up? I just think its cute and I never see this behavior at home.

:D I've got just albinos in most of my tanks but in the one where there is albinos. pigmies and c.delphax they stick with their own kind cept when they are feeding. It's interesting to watch when they are parted.......they almost panic till they are back together again.

Hi guppygirly :)

I think you will see more of this behavior with just albinos and bronze corys in your tank than with a mixture of different kinds. I also think that the more corys you have the more natural their environment will be and the more likely that they will show schooling behaviors.

When you get them and add them to your tank, watch them when they find each other. They will be soooo happy! :D

I have six panda cories (love em to bits), but they dont really shoal as a group unless they are frightened, like when I clean the gravel. Usually they hang about in groups of two or three, last night I saw 4 swimming about together which is very unusual. As far as I am aware shoaling is a protection instinct and fish will only shoal in great numbers when threatened. If you have lots of plants and decor in the tank the fish feel more comfortable and dont feel the need to shoal a lot. This is the case for most fish, not only cories. I am just speaking from my own experience but I dont think they will shoal that much if they are content in their own little world

Sorry, just a little extra note. When I go into fish shops I often see fish shoaling in large numbers and i think wow wouldnt it be great to have my fish shoal like that. Then if I buy and get them home they dont shoal at all. This is because fish shop tanks have no or very little decor in them so the fish feel exposed and shoal for safety. Also they are present in high numbers which also encourages fish to shoal. I have 17 Harlequins in a big tank (400l), they shoal when i come into the room and sometimes when they are disturbed, it is so cool to see them do this. But after a while they kinda settle in little groups rather than as one group. I havent kept that many fish but the Harlequins have impressed me so far as the best shoalers. Hope this helps

I guess my cories are comfortable :D I have a school of 6 white clouds and another school of 6 zebra danios they don't school unless the pearl gouramis come near them..and even then they all scramble together, not in seprate schools :sly: Ah well, as long as they are happy then I am too.
