My aunt gave me some corals she had on her shelves for a long time... it was really nice of her actually =)

Thing is, she told me that before she wanted to give them to me, she wanted to clean them... and by doing so, she dipped the corals in water mixed in with some chlorox @_@;;;

well, my question is...will the corals be safe to put in my tank, after I've soaked them in water for a long period of time??

As of now, I've had them submerged in water for about a month now (I change the water twice a week hoping that the chlorox will ..fade away...)

I hope that someday I can use the corals... it would definately look lovely in my tank =}

Thanks in advance! =)

Chlorox is just sodium hypochlorite isn't it? So the only dangerous part is the chlorine which you could neutralise with water conditioner. If you can no longer smell chlorine it's probably safe.

As for putting coral in the aquarium - it depends on the type of aquarium. Crushed coral is used to maintain a high pH in low pH, soft water - so it may affect your pH and hardness, over time.

I once used a barnacle type coral I found in my tank, boiled it for an hour and let it sit in dechlorinated water for a few days.

Never had any problems - all readings stayed fine. What sort of coral is it?

Paul.

Umm...actually I'm not sure what type of corals they are... All I know is that they're real... XD
I'll try and take some pictures and upload them here ASAP. =)

Thanks again for the info!!

The answer being...yes, you can use pieces of dead coral assuming you have them cleaned good. just rinse and rinse, soak in water loaded with stress coat, or another declorinator. Dead coral needs to be bleached everyonce and a while, otherwise it turns a brownish color.

Thanks for the tip about having them bleached once in a while!! =)
Okay well I think I've had them rinsed pretty well...they've been under water for quite a while now, with a lot of dechlorinating solution... I also added some methylanine blue (sp?) if that helps do anything o_O;...

Well, I've finally decided to add the corals in my tank... here are some pictures... o-o;
I'm still cycling the tank, however cycling is a bit harder for me as I don't have any water testing kits...(It's so hard to find them here in the philippines! ugh...)

so yes... here are the pictures:

Also, could anyone help me identify those two corals? That would be great =)
I plan on adding a pair of convicts in this set up, would that be okay? also, what kind of fish could I add? I've heard that convicts can get very territorial esp. when it comes to breeding time...
it's a 50 gallon tank...so if it's only good for housing 1 pair of convicts then I'm happy with that =)
