Hiya , Newbie question here ....

Can you use coral sand in a tropical set up ? i have had conflicing advice , some say NO , as it contains calcium and this will mess with the water values , others say YES its OK ??

Help ...................... :/

If you want sand for use with other freshwater fish, then kids play sand is fine, and cheap too!

just rinse it for a few hours in a bucket to get rid off the fine dust.

Welcome to TFF!!

Trouble is , im fishless cycling the tank at the mo' with coral sand in place ... all the levels are good except the hardness .. Can i do a partial water change with RO to combat this ??

to be honest mate.. kids sand is what i was told by quite a few people on here..

i am also currently doing a fishless cycle in 10 gallon for a fancy goldfish.

i wanted to use sand too, but got put off the idea when i saw a bag of kids sand and it was a dark horrible english beach style sand!

So now I'm guna just use small yellow gravel.

You might want to get some more experienced advice from some of the other keepers rather than me!

coral sand is gonna make your PH too high for most fish apart from the ones fishkiller_nomore listed.

it naturally buffers the water you see.

i use it in my african cichlid tank cos they like a high PH and its 100 times better than having to add chemicals to get the high PH.

PH is currently at 7.5 , but as i mentioned im still cycling the tank . Really dont want to have too remove all the coral sand as this is going to upset the tank and put me back to square 1 ... !!

Removing the sand will not greatly affect the cycle, most of any bacteria colony formed will be in your filter media. If you are going to change it out, do it now rather than later when fish are in there.
