Does anybody use this in their aquarium display? My lfs has pieces of washed coal for sale as aquarium decor. I thought they might look nice since I have black sand in there. I read it was a pain to clean, but the book didn't say how to clean it. Would it break down and make a mess?

 okay, turns out it wasn't coal at lfs. It was obsidion. My boyfriend said not to drop it, as it would be really sharp if it broke. It's really pretty, like black glass, but has been sanded so there are no sharp edges. I figure if I'm really careful it would be okay. Maybe a really sexy spawning rock for my dwarf cichlids?

Obsidian - lava rock.

I thought this was the stuff thats supposes to be really sharp ? If they have sanded it all down and no sharp edges you should be OK. Its basically glass, so it shouldnt leak carbon. Although im not sure if I would risk it.
