after a trip to one of my lfs today i spotted some clown killifish they had for sale. they were still acclimatising so not for sale just yet.... i have recently set up a 90L tank that houses plenty of shrimp, 3 otocinclus and panda corydoras. ive been lookig for a small fish species to fill the swimming space thats available and decided on platinum/gold tetras.
i was wondering if a small group of these killis would so ok in this set up? i was thinking of about 4-5 of them

the tank is mature and pH 7.5 ish, has lots of plants that are a mix of real and plastic and sand substrate. filtered by a sponge filter and the in hood filter that has a sponge over the intake so my shrimp dont go missing.....

ive never kept a killi before but liked the look of these little fellas, would it work?
heres a pic of the tank they would be put into, excuse the light reflection in the center  -

I have Ps. annulatus.
These would compliment your tank if you are planning to keep small species, They will keep to the surface area most of the time but if you could get the pH down a little it may be more beneficial for their well being.

cheers C, yeah im only planning small species. im going for a group of 10 gold tetra and maybe a small group of these killis when they are available for sale.
i have been told that they dont have a long lifespan and may only last a year is this correct? this is the only thing that has put me off as they arent the cheapest fish available

Not all killifish are annual species. Ps annulatus is not an annual species and will last much longer than one year.
I don't know how much you are being asked to fork out for a pair but I'd expect it's anywhere between £6-£10. Look for a good strong pair go for the biggest most robust pair in the tank.

Males will not tolerate each other too well especially in the company of females.
I would purchase a sexed trio (one male : two females)or outweigh the males with females its up to you.
Good luck with the compo

thanks bigC, how do i tell the sexes apart?

"The male is the larger, more brightly coloured fish with longer caudal, dorsal and anal fins" according to the SF profile ;)

Looking forward to seeing how this goes for you, as Clown killis are one species that are currently on my "micro" fish wishlist.

Incredible colours! Fancied some of these for a while. This is making me want to set the Arc up as a killi tank once the current inhabitants are moved to a bigger tank.
