Cleaning Sand

I have a gravel vac and every once a week i do a water change. I hover the gravel vac over the sand to suck up the **** thats sitting on top. I use a turkey baster every dayh to suck up soem more **** that i see
How do you keep your sand looking clean as at the mo it seems real hard to do so!
