Cleaning Sand

I have a 40gal tank and have never cleaned the sand since i bought the tank 6 months ago. I have 2 corys that sift through the sand and clear the surface so there is no waste. Could i use a gravel cleaner from my old tank if i rinsed it? What is the easiest way to do this without losing too much sand

I've just used sand as a substrate in my tank which is cycling at the moment.

I believe that you use your syphon and hover it about 1-2" above the sand, but check out this thread
