My second 55 Gallon tank should be cycled in less than a week, so I'm starting to look to get some plants. I'd like to order them by Monday so they get here early next week and I can get them planted and arranged the way I want them before I add fish. I posted a potential plant list in my Journal thread, but thought I might get more responses here:

2 Java Fern (maybe 'lace', since I have 'normal' and 'narrow leaf' in my other 55 Gallon)
2 Amazon Sword
3 Cryptocoryne Wendii Tropica (have this in my other tank and it's beautiful)
? Micro Sword/HC/Glosso (would love for this to be the focal foreground plant)
1 Brazilian Pennywort (comes with 6-8 stems)
1 Ludwigia Broadleaf (undecided - is this a difficult plant?)
2 Water Sprite
2 Wisteria
10 Broad Leaf Sword

I'm going to have 2 WPG (maybe a little over - 130 Watts) over this tank. I would rather do a liquid carbon fert like Seachem Excel rather than going pressurized CO2. Not only does the cost keep me away from it, but this new tank is in my bedroom and there really isn't room for a CO2 cylinder.

I've read tons and tons of threads about carpet plants, and I'm really torn between Micro Sword, HC, or Glosso. Shocker, right? I want something that stays relatively short. There seem to be pros and cons to each of them. I'm able to get any of the 3 in potted, which sounds like would be the better option than getting it sold like a 'mat' (i.e. one place selling said the Micro Sword mat was sod-like). I have ruled out Dwarf Hairgrass as I didn't read too many good things about that, even though I love the look of it, I would hate to spend all the time planting it only to have it die. I don't mind some trial and error, but I definitely want to avoid anything that is very likely to fail in my tank. Price wise, all of these carpet plants are comparable. I do really like the look of HC and was leaning towards that a bit more than the Micro Sword, but then I of course read plenty about it being difficult. It seems like the Glosso would be the easiest (and I'm using that term loosely) than the rest of them, but then I worry about it growing too tall. I *think* 2 WPG-ish would be sufficient?

Any insight you guys can offer is much appreciated, including the # of each plant I've proposed above. I think I'm making myself crazy.

Well, I think I'm going to try HC and hope for the best. If it doesn't work I'll try something else. :good:

Dosing liquid carbon in a 55g will cost an absolute fortune long term, combined with the high light, I would honestly say you'd be far better off with pressurised.

What are you going to dose for nutrients?

I was likely going to try Excel and Flourish and see how that works for me, however based on Gav935, it seems pressurized CO2 would be cheaper in the long run than relying on Excel.

Ok. But you will need to add nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium via salts or something like EasyLife Nitro (for nitrogen). Flourish doesn't have any where near enough of these.

I do have a Potassium fert right now that I could use, but yes I'll need to get some additional for the other things you mentioned. I *think* I've reviewed EI dosing before and it had everything I would probably need there?

Have you considered any moss?

I've seen some moss carpets that look effective, especially if you contour it a little and choose maybe flame moss for instance.

I do like moss, but I've heard it can be quite invasive on substrate. I prefer the look of it on wood. I'm trying to grow java moss on a piece of slate in my other tank and it's been a pain and it floats up and gets everywhere. I've re-attached it about 3 times now, so that experience kind of turned me off to moss.

I totally understand, the securing of moss is a PITA. but it give a great effect aging wood and rocks. I have tried 2 different techniques for attaching it this time and i am seeing pleasing results.

I am going to be taking some photos tonight. Check my sig thread tomrrow for some ideas if you want.

I certainly will! I love checking out other tanks for ideas since I'm not very creative myself.
