I have two cherry barbs. Over the past few days one has developed a rather nasty looking red lump on her side. Does anyone have any advice about it?

Size of tank in gallons or litres.
How many fish and which type.
Water stats in ammonia, nitrite nitrate, and ph.

is the lump beneath the skin, or on top.
Does the lump feel hard, or soft like filled with fluid.
Has the lump just suddenly appeared.
Any signs of flicking and rubbing, excess mucas, darting, errtic swimming, laboured breathing.

Size - 45 litres
Fish - Two cherry barbs, One Figure Eight Puffer (the barbs were to keep the tank cycled until I bought the puffer. They will be going in my girlfriends tank but she won't have them until they're well again) (The barbs and puffer are getting along fine)

PH - 7.5
Nitrite - 1 mg/litre
Nitrate - 10 mg/litre (water change day tomorrow)

The lump is on top of the skin. I've not held the fish but it looks like its filled with liquid. The lump wasn't visible until Saturday and it has gotten worse over the past day or so.

No signs of flicking or rubbing. There is no excess mucus, she's not swimming any differently than usual but there are signs of laboured breathing.

What's the make of the test kit are you using.
Do you have ammonia reading.

It's best to isolate fish with lumps incase there burst and infect the tank.
I would use a bacterial med on the fish,if the lumps filled with fluid.
