Hi guys

My tank is up and running nicely and my Eheim Ecco filter just contains the sponge that came with it. I've seen and read about using ceramic rings or pieces that can be used in the filter that will help colonise loads of friendly bacteria.

My wife hand builds and sells terracotta ornaments for aquariums. Can i just use any spare bits that she discards and put them in the filter or are these ceramic things made specially in order to work better in the filter??

Any ideas?

They pottery shards would not harm anything a should prove slightly beneficial. Always keep an eye on things when trying something new though.

The rings and bio balls are favorites because their shape allows for a lot of surface area for bacteria to grow on. You could have your wife just create some rings for you and achieve even better results.
