Does anyone have a good way to catch adult corys? We are taking our 5 adults to the LFS and need to catch them. They are in our community tank, which is very well planted and before when we had fry in there (before we had the growing out fry tank) they used to dart around and we joked how difficult it would be to catch them. We need to do it in the next day or so as the LFS are waiting for them. The tank is pretty wide, 48" x 15" x 18", so 2 nets is going to be really difficult. Are there any home made traps that would work?

Any suggestions would be appreciated :good:

Thanks, Carmen :D

i had this problem with a plec that didnt like my net i chased him into a corner and basicly traped him

If they're used to a certian feeding spot, in the morning, stick the largest net you have inside the tank around the area they'll be in, later on, feed as normal, as they go out, scoop them up. Or make a trap using a plastic bottle.

I might be tottallyway off here but it Wouldn't be Fantasea Aquatics would it? I work there;)

I'd use a cup and a net. Put the cup in the bottom of the tank and chase the cories into the cup with a net...then cover the cup with the net and dump it in a bag. This is how I caught my sister's 10" plec.

I find that corries are rather easy to scare into a corner and catch them that way, I find that you start with the net at the bottom of the tank, then scare them upwards, and you can move the net up and quickly get them this way because when they get to the surface they have no place to go.

I have heard from many expreinced aquarust that using two nets, one for scaring and the other for catching, is the best method however I have not had success with this method.

I have some very fast Tiger rasboras that requied me to remove all the plants in my tank to catch them...That sucked...but I was a rookie then and I am much better at catching fish now...

Good luck!

HI Dianne

It is Alex and Carmen. Didn't know you were on this forum. Will you be at Fantasea this weekend? We try only go in when you are there. So we'd like to bring the cories in when you are in.
Keep well, Carmen :D

For anyone who doesn't know, Fantasea is the best LFS we have been to, who give great advice and have wonderful fish. Also very reasonably priced, we go there weekly, even if it's just to look around. In testiment to how good they are, we found Sterbai fry in their tank yesterday while there, which is a sign of how well they look after their fish there!!!!
Thanks to everyone else for your suggestions, we'll be trying them out later today :D

hi
do a search on google for a bottle fish trap you'll find a site with pics but
basically cut the top 3rd of old washed cool drink plastic bottle off, invert it & place inside the other end so you have a sort of funnel leading to the end of the bottle. put some fav cory snack in there & place in tank, fish swim in & cant figure out how to escape.
make sure your around though to reset the trap as you'll prob find every other fish in your tank in there at some time or other & you dont want them or the corys to get stressed.
took a while b ut worked for us trying to catch a cae for rehoming & our corys whilst we were trying to get the cae were always getting stuck in there!!!
good luck!

make it easy on yourself and drop some of the water down to a low level... makes it MUCH easier to catch most fish and with less stress of chasing them around the tank :)
