HI,

How long do you keep the carbon filter out whilst under treatment, one of my tanks has been treated for finrot, one of the fish had very very mild damage on its fin but thought catch it realy is best..

Should i leave the carbon filter out until its finished?

Thanks.

You always remove the black carbon when adding a med to the tank.
Throw it away as it no good once it drys up.
Black carbon only good for removing meds so it a complete waste of money to use it all the time.

leave it out untill disease is gone. the carbon will remove all meds placed into the tank. i recommend continue treatment untill disease is cured, then treat one last time to be secure, then place carbon back in. cheers.

OK thanks, i have put the carbon filter in a air tight sealed bag :)

I would throw it away heard that black carbon only works for about two days.

Cant really throw it away, its part of my filter, the actual carbon pad is recomended to only be changed rarely..

I can throw the pad away but not the holder

If you use black carbon all the time you change it every 4 to six weeks, so I don't know where you got that info from.

My mistake, i just read the filter guide book and its says, The easy crystal Biofoam filter sould be replace rarely (thats the black one i took out) seems it may not be carbon..

THe other pads in it are white and green and inside have black things in, and says replace every 4 weeks (it says these are for crystal clear water) is this maybe the one i should be taking out?

Carbon is an activated granular carbon that offers maximum usable surface area, both for adsorption of liquefied impurities, organic compounds, odors, etc. and for usable attachment nodes for bacteria.

Pull out filter basket. Place carbon insert on top of Aqua Clear Foam Insert. Replace basket in filter. Rinse carbon insert weekly. Replace once a month, sooner if required. Never replace carbon and foam simultaneously.

I recommend using BioMAX as it is used to build up and keep the bacteria needed unlike carbon inserts. As for placing the Carbon sac in a baggy that won't help at all, the bacteria will still die if there is no fish ;)

Not familar with your type of filter but the carbon granules is your black carbon.
If you have a good filter turn over and maintain the tank once a week that should keep your water crystal clear.
My tank crystal clear without using the black carrbon, though I do have two filters running.

i have the aqua clear 200 with carbon and 2 sponges and i haven't replaced teh carbon in long time, i know i should put biomax but it is runing fine tank cycled etc for over 6 months now. so i probably won't remove the carbon unless something goes wrong seriously. if carbon works for you as it does for me, great no worries.

if you read the description it says..

Chemical filtration: Special activated carbon to eliminate water clouding and unpleasant odours
EasyCrystal® Filters are extremely easy to clean: Replace the filter cartridge every 4 weeks. No need to rinse the filter medium, no more wet hands!

i will say, after doing a treatment you should ALWAYS replace the carbon sac with a new one.

Just realised something, i got two boxes of filter packs...

One box is easycrystal filterpack C 250/300

and

the other is... One box is easycrystal filterpack 250/300

IT seems the box with the C is the one with the active carbon.

And the the other box is without the C(carbon), so if i put one of these in, it should be ok for using treatment as they have no active carbon in them, does that make sense?

Do you think that will be fine.

Written by tolak and I agree what he has said.

Carbon is only effective for a few days to a week before it is full of the sort of impurities it removes. Most everyone runs it to remove medication, as it is excellent at chemical filtration. Beyond this your water contains little if any chemicals, the most commonly found in tap water is chlorine & chloramine. These are more easily dealt with using a good water conditioner, as opening up your cannister once or twice weekly is not needed for maintenance, and is more trouble than using a good water conditioner.

Save the carbon for when you may need it, most probably for removing meds. As far as what to replace it with, that depends on the fish you are stocking, and the stocking density
