So about an hour ago i was doing a water change on my 55gal community... Fish list is on my profile of if you want illl give it here but thats besides the point. I has just finsished adding the new water, and turned my filter off to clean out the intake tubes on my "aqau clear 110". I cleaned them out they get pretty gunked up, Put them back on and when i turned the filter back on i saw fine black gravel pouring from the filter, i knew exactley what it was and quickly jumped up on my chair to see a hole in the activated carbon bag i jumped back down to shut the power off to it. When i went to take it out the bag fell apart, it had almost completey disinegrated . So i pulled the whole filter media slider out. tossed it in a bucket filled with tank water (so i dont kill all my BB and mini cycle my tank :S) i got the carbon off the sponge and other media and put it back into my tank. I then quicky got my siphon tube out and began vaccuming the gravel, andf the pile of carbon, the carbon didnt exactly siphon but it got suspeneded in the vaccum as i did it so it was very easy to get it out from there.

That was exciting :( poor dill my green spotted pleco got the scare of his life i think, it was raining rocks on his head i think he'll be alright now, the water got pretty cloudy after that but its clearing up again, i put the rest of my carbon into an old nylon for now till i get a new pouch, couldnt beleive it just fell apart like that.

Quick question do you think that the activated carbon released freely into the tank like that will hurt the fish?

And also a warning to anyone else who own an Aqau Clear Filter beware of the bags the media come in it may not hold up. jsust a warning, this is the first time ive seen this and i own a couple aqau clear filters.

Well thanks for your time it was a crazy night hope all the fish will be ok.

Carbon wont hurt your fish. Don't really need carbon anyway.

just take out what you can. carbon is only useful to take out medications. otherwise, its just a waste of money, but its always good to have some just incase of an emergency

Ya i siphoned it all up and put most of it back in a nylon. I just picked up a new packet but i wont be putting it in for a while. Thanks guys'
