Please see the photos below of a rock I purchased from my lfs. I can't remember what type of rock/stone it was advertised at, but it was priced at 99p/Kg.

In the second picture you can see a bit closer what looks like 'might' be rust, but I'm not certain.

I'd rather not get rid of it as it goes well where it is, but obviously I will have to if it is recommended.

To tell you the trouth, it only looks like a simple ore, composed of a different type of rock, and they both look harmless. Looks natural, really.

Exactly, an ore, consisting of compounded metals.
And that would be rust on the metals you see on the corner :/

I wouldn't risk it,

Cheers,

Maximus

They may well be stone ores or even a type of nonrusting metal. Best solution: Test it with a strong magnet or go to a geologist.

I have a rock from a stream. It is irridicent, but has a streak of brown. It has not harmed any of my fish. It looks just like the second pic. If you are in doubt, don't use the rock. If not, Go ahead, but I cannot claim responsibilty for fish problems. Consult with a geologist if you like the rock enough.

OK.

If I didn't want to keep it, would I have to treat the water at this stage?

If it is actually rust though, would it gradually get worse, and if I kept it, would I then have to treat the water at a later stage?

I'm just starting a fishless cycle, so don't want to risk mucking it up.

It would get worse if it were rust.
