I just set up a new 30 gal tank. It is completely cycled.

Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 40
pH ranges from 7.4 - 7.8
Temp 78 degrees

Tank mates:

3 turquoise Gourami about 3" - 3.5" each
3 hatchet fish will be adding 2-3 more when LFS gets more next week
1 upside down catfish

I have read that the yellow labs are less aggressive than most cichlids. Is it true?
Am I asking for trouble? :dunno:

Thought I would ask the cichlid experts. TIA!

Add Blood Parrots in there! :*) I'm wondering the same thing for my fishies :D

iv heard similar claims but i havn't met anyone who accually owns them. the gouramis would have be worried as they them selves are semi-aggressive. but as far as i know hatchet fish and your cat are pretty passive. i dout yellow labs will attack anything that wasn't gunna fight back, but those gouramis might not be happy shareing their space, id wait for the conformation of somone here who knows a little more, i am by no means and expert here.

Gourami's and Yellow Labs will not mix very well - not a good idea in the least. The reputation of Yellow Labs as peaceful cichlids is only compared to other fish they should be kept with - other Malawi cichlids.

OK, then I guess it's a no go on the yellow labs. :( I definitely don't want a blood bath here.

Would rams and Gourami's also be aggressive together? There was also some very nice looking blue rams but I haven't done much research on those yet.

I guess I will have to wait until the turtle moves out of the 55 gal & into the pond area we are building then maybe I can have a cichlid tank. But I don't think that will be finished until next spring.

Thanks again!
