Hey, I was planning to set up a dp tank a few months ago, but got round to it the other day - thing is I'd left the cactus compost in a bucket of water when I was first doing it, to let it seperate.

when I came to put a layer of it in the tank, it smelt kind of sulphurus which I didn't think was right at the time, but I assumed that some hardy zebra danios wouldn't mind it. So I shoved some sand on top, then a few plants and left it to settle before adding the danios.

I added two danios from my established tank, (they'd been used to cycle that) so I'd had them for about 15 months - one went missing the first day, I've no idea where to. And then the 2nd one I found floating at the surface a couple of days later. I don't have any testing stuff as I've never needed it, but I checked the temp everyday and all that.

So do you think my compost is the cause??

Non-toxic playsand, was recommended by a few users on here - so I don't think its that.

But I can't see why cactus compost would go that way, it was left in a bucket of water in the cellar.

just had to check :) rule out the possibliities and what ever is left - no matter how improbable - is the probable.
