Right folks. I'm just about to swap to canister CO2 and was going to add a bubble counter...

The question i have is whats the point? I can count the bubble as the go into the tank. Do they serve any other point?

I'm trying to do this as low cost as possible so i can offer it as a good alternative to DIY yeast for every one to try ;)

I assume you're talking about the plastic zig zag frames that the bubbles run up. Like this...

They hold the bubbles in the water for longer allowing more of the CO2 to dissolve in the water. You'll notice that the bubbles get smaller as they move upwards, they also get slower.

I use a bought cannister and bubble difussor but have moved on to a homemade CO2 mix for cost reasons.

I have found that using 2 canisters into 1 of the frames gives off a good flow rate.

I presume when you say canister you mean you are changing over to pressurised Co2? In which case if you are the need for a bubble counter really depends on your method of injection. If you are injecting into a canister filter (which makes a good reactor) then you cannot see the amount of co2 you are putting into the tank unless you have a bubble counter. Other methods of reactor also may not let you see the bubble rate, the ladders used on the hagen systems are not the best method to injecting co2.

nope - thats a defuser.

We have one of those (hence we can count the bubble rate without a bubble counter).

until last week i was using DIY into a ladder defuser.
I took the defuser out and placed the output into the intake of our canister filter.

So as pointed out - at the moment i cant count the bubble rate.

So if i'm measuring the PH etc and monitering it - i dont need to know the bubble rate at all just that enough CO2 is getting into the water.

Well yes but you could still do with knowing how much is going in so you know when its running out. Bubble counters are more used in pressurised systems as you can adjust th ebubble rate to whatever you like, so you need to see what your putting in. :)

cool - so they are exactly what it says on the tin. No more - no less.

I'll see how i get on - but will probubly make my own :)

Yep thats all they do they just count the amount of Co2 bubbles you are putting in, they are really simple, no doubt you could make your own! B)
