Hi all.

I got a 4 Sunset Platys a few weeks ago (unfortunately one died) but I am fairly sure that I have 2 females and a male. One of the females is "syncro swimming" with a male and getting fatter by the day. From what I have read this leads me too belive that she may be pregnant?

The tankmates are not the types you would want to leave as babysitters  (Tiger barbs, BA Tetra, Crayfish) so I am setting up my 20G again tonight (Mature filter, substrate and 50% mature tank water for a quick cycle).

Couple of questions:

1) If I move the plattys over and they do give birth how long will I have before they stary eating the young?

2) Are there any fish suitable to go in a breeding tank which will not eat the young? The tank may be a little dull otherwise (not a fan of Corys).

Many thanks

Wilde. :D

Hi mate the tank idea sounds great i normally leave them in for 12 hours depending on how long each drop takes, and i move the pregnant female across on her own so she will be the only fish in the tank this will help her relax and keep stress levels down also make sure you have plenty of hiding places for the fry because if one swims in her way she will eat it. Now as for tank mates bristlenose plecs are good with fry, i have 3 fully grown ones with my endler fry and they dont bother each other so these would be a good option, another option could be some endlers as they dont really eat fry from what ive seen myn have not attempted to eat their own young so i imagine they would leave larger platty young alone.

Cheers for your help. Will try to get some pics of my tanks up soon.
