Fish Fanatic
Hi,
And i wrote this and wanted to see if this sounded okay.
This is about breeding them til when the fry are hatched. i have bred bettas before but all of the fry died. i dont know exactly why but that was two years ago and i want to try again.
So this is info that i have gathered...
i still need to look up stuff on the fry....
Breeding Bettas!
First the male and female should be taken good care of for at last a week before breeding. This includes feeding them live food. This allows for more eggs to be in the spawn.
The male should be in a tank ( 10 gallon ) wiht the water treated and up to 5 inches. You should have a sponge filter/ corner filter in there that has been on before you have even introduced them. \
So right now the female is in a different tank.
Set up of the tank - you need a sponge/corner filter, some plants, thermometer, hurricane glass, and a styrofoam cup for the male to make a bubble nest - the cup has to be floating and taped to the side there also should be a cover on the tank and the lights.
INTRODUCING THE PAIR
So the tank should be set up. Turn off the filter. Now, to introduce the female, put her in the hurricane glass, the male will start to swim and flare at her... Allow the male to build a bubble nest right under that cup. And make sure you give him time to build the bubble nest. The female will show vertical bars and swim with her head down if she is ready. When she does this release her, and also make sure that the bubble nest is good too.
You need to watch them closly bc they can get harmed. The male will continue to build the nest and chase the female. She might get nipped and her fins torn. But if they are in danger then remove them from eachother. If they are okay and just chasing then continue.
SPAWNING
Once she is ready she will go under the nest with the male. They will probably swim around eachother.... But waht they do when they spawn is - The male wraps his body around the female and squeezes the eggs out of her and releases sperm and fertilizes them while they fall. The female is paralized and doesnt move for a couple seconds. While she is like this the male goes down and gets the eggs and goes back up shoots them in the bubble nest then back down and up to the nest again....
The female might help or eat the eggs and soemtimes the male...
They will do this several times til there is no more eggs. After they are done spawning remove the female. Put some Bettamax with her to heal her fins...
The Father And The Eggs.
The dad will be picking up eggs and taking them back to the nest a lot. he may put smoe more bubbles in the nest...
So he takes care of them for the next 24-48 hours.
They Hatch!!!!
Behold you got fry!!
They look like little hairs that are very small. They will fall down and the dad will pick them up go up and put it back where it belongs. they will hang from the surface of the water and park under the cup. The next three days you do not need to feed them b/c they feed off their yolksac..
3rd DAY.
FEED THEM.
This is also the time to REMOVE THE MALE once they are all swimming!
by the third day they have used up their yolk sac and you will have to feed them. You will need microworms and baby brine shrimp.
Microworms Scrape a little just to put on top of a tooth pick and swish around in the water.
BBS- use eyedropper, ect. to get a small amount and put in water to feed.
They will need fed 2-3 times a day.
Now that is From Breeding TO DAY 3. Does that sound okay. i am a little confused
about the filter and the bubbler...
and well i did this to see if this is the right way of doing it and if you dont see anything that should be in there then please tell me or if i have to change anything...
and any info on the filter would be good.
i wanted to know if i really need a bubbler. but i wanted to turn on the filter when they are born b/c it is not that powerful - it is a sponge filter.... and it would make bubbles in that water by the flow of the clean water coming out. is that okay to turn it on when they are born...
Thanks,
Chris
