This is my Aussie Land Hermit Crab (coenobita variabilis), Atlas.
I’ve had Atlas for 2 years now. I got her as a boy but in the last year she turned into a girl! Hermit crabs can change sex as they moult however to due the lack of research into hermit crabs, the mechanism and reasons behind the change are still unknown. We speculate it’s to ensure there’s always a mix of breeding males and females in a population. Altas lives in my 4ft green themed tank with 6 other tank mates, Blossom, Fern, Juniper (the girls) and Silas, Parker and Scout (the boys).
My Hermie Journey started in November 2021 when I got my first hermit crabs. Back then, care information was so hard to find because people didn’t really know what they needed and there was no consideration on whether owners hermit crabs were thriving or merely surviving. Through my research I was lucky enough to find a hermit crab care support group where I met the amazing hermit crab mum, Tiffany; now founder of The Happy Hermie.
A year later in December 2022, I created Yellow Wattle Pets to share my love of our beautiful native fauna and flora. Through Yellow Wattle Pets I bred and sold native leaf and stick insects, bearded dragons and offered dog walking and exotic pet sitting services. In April 2023 I extended our services to include hermit crab rescue rehabilitation and rehoming services and founded our Hermit Crab rescue, Hermie Haven.
Fast forward to April 2025, I closed Hermie Haven after a successful 2 years and over 50 rescues, to work alongside Tiffany, packing orders at The Happy Hermie HQ and I take care of the Victoria sector of The Happy Hermie’s rescue and rehab!
