I have 2 blue tetra's in my tank, same as the pic seen below

blue-tetra-profile.jpg

They have been in there about 2 months now. About a month ago I noticed 1 of them had about 80% of it's tail missing so I put a hard plastic floating breeding trap into the tank and put the tetra into it so the other fish couldn't get to it.

After about a week the tetra's tail had grown back so I let it out of the breeding trap into the main tank and within a day it's tail was missing again so I had to put it back in the breeding trap. This has happened 3 times now, everytime the tail has grown back and it's released, the tails missing again within a day.

I'm guessing something is attacking it but the only thing I can think off is the other tetra attacking it because if it was another fish doing the attacking, why arent they attacking the other blue tetra I have in there??

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

well i think you might be a bit overstocked there..so with little room for fish to make territories, that can lead to a lot of problems.
your blue tetra should also be in a group of 6, they might not get picked on in a bigger group because they wouldn't look like such easy targets..right now they are probably significantly smaller than anything in your tank and could easily get picked on.

i could see the gourami, maybe sharks (don't know much about them), the molly/swordtail picking on them...i say this because i've noticed that these fish seem to be.."curious" as to what is food, and what is not.
for example i had a dwarf gourami with an otto (small fish), and he would go peck on him much..he didn't seem to dislike the otto..just thought he might be food. also i've seen molly's pick on other fish a little bit..and swordtails are pretty similar

you are definately overstocked though..and those sharks are going to get too big for your tank
i know your tank looks big, i have one similar sized..but you should have around 1" of fish (full grown size) to every gallon..the gourami will start to pick on smaller fish, and they can get to 12"..each.

sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Yes I know the tank is slightly overstocked and will be looking to buy a 100 gallon tank soon, I've just purchased an eheim 2075 pro 3 and a koralia powerhead for the 125 ltr as I was a bit worried the jewul internal filter may eventually struggle.

I did have 6 of the tetra's, but 4 died when I had a nitrite spike about a month ago, everything is fine now, even so when the tetra has been in the breeding trap, the only other tetra has been fine in the tank and no other fish has gone near it. I dont seem to have any probs with betta or sharks, they seem fine with all the other fish. I wish I could just catch one of the fish having ago at it then I'd know which was causing the problem.

is the other one bigger? more active? different color a little? i don't know..those are my guesses.

if i were you i'd try and hurry up with that other tank..it'll reduce a lot of your stresses. (i read some of your other posts).
