Hi everyone,

I brought 10 Blue Neons a few weeks back for my new tank. The tank is set up using my mature kit from an old tank. Its cycling fine.

I noticed this morning one of my Bluies is looking a little fat. My Question is do i stick her in the hatchery or should i leave her to roam the tank? I have a feeling the eggs will be eaten if she is left to lay in the main tank area and wanted to try and save some.

I have Clown Loaches and Glass cats, plecos, cory etc so the ground is pretty well sweeped each night!

Am i fighting a loosing battle here? Will she even drop the eggs in a hatchery?

Any adivce welcome.

Thanks.

Sorry for the crappie image, Good old Nokia N95!!

She might drop the eggs in a hatchery but they are not fertilised yet so will not develop. With most (maybe all?) tetras the females (and in some cases many males) will swim around and scatter the eggs with the male(s) swimming alongside fertilising them. So you would need to add at least one mature, ready to spawn, male as well (and a typical breeding trap really isnt big enough for them to do this).

Once they have finished they will often turn right around and eat all of the eggs they have just laid..... I wouldn't hold out to mny hopes of eggs making it to fry but it can happen. My tetra's and corys spawn all the time in my community tank and while most of the egg's disappear within a few minutes I do get the occasional fry appear out of nowhere :)

Thats a shame.

Thanks for an informative answer!
