right i've had it in the back of my mind for a while know I could really do with a quarantine/hospital tank... we've 6 tanks running now, touch wood they're all healthy and happy but I think we could do with the backup of somewhere for poorly fish to go. For the last few month's Ian's used his 3g as one but it's full time inhabitant will be arriving in the next few weeks so that won't be an option anymore.

Was thinking size wise, surley it would need to be big enough to hold your biggest fish without causing it any more stress from being in too small a tank.

well my biggest fish is an Oscar.... so would the quarantine tank need to be like 50/60g or something (i know that's smaller than you'd keep one in full time, but just for a week or so maybe that'd be ok?). That's a big tank to just have there sat doing nothing isn't it :S See if you were just going to go for a 15/20g or something you could have it away in a cupboard and leave the filter cycline in another tank, then get it out and set up when you need it. But with a big tank you couldn't really do that could you?

So all of you with big fishes, what do you do about it?

For a temporary quar or med, you could use a 20 long for an oscar. Many meds require daily water changes, which is what would be needed with an oscar in a 20.

I have a few large common plecs, plenty of adult angels, & a rapidly growing oscar. I have extra 20 highs, and a 28 gallon Petco tank in case some large fish needs isolation.

I have a spare 25 gallon (30x12x15") which is used if i need to quarentine a fish and is fine for most fish up to around a foot long as a temporary home. For my really big fish its just not practical to have a quarentine tank big enough for them so if (heaven forbid) anything does ever go wrong with them any treatment would have to be given in their tank. I do however have dividers for all my tanks which can be used to seperate fish if one is injured and needs a little time to recover without being harrassed.
