I got a BGK the other day, and I'm worried about it. I dont think it has come out of the cave that is oin the driftwood, is this unnusual, I have never seen it eat so I am kind of worried that the little guy will starve to death in there. If you know what I should do please help me. ;)

i dont know much about them, but what size tank is yours?
they are nocturnal, and usually only come out at night. i think they would eat blood worms too, frozen or live. maybe if its not eating, you should feed it when the lights are out, so he can get them without competeing with the other fish for food.

Teht tank is a 55, I plan on upgrading when he gets too big for the tank but I heard that they take years to grow!Thats a good idea maybe I will try to feed him tonight sometime, thanks!

Mine is a fairly picky eater. LOVES frozen bloodworms, won't touch too much of other stuff.

Feed right after the lights go out, and have as many room lights out as possible, perhaps have a hall light on or something so your eyes have just enough light to see (after they adjust to the dark). put in some frozen bloodworms and see if he'll come out to eat.

I suggest buying or making a moonlight system. I made one with a few LEDs, and don't have it very bright, just enough for me to see what is going on in there when all the roomlights are out.

also, what other fish are in the tank with it? anything that might be harrassing it? how big is the BGK now?

good luck

No there is nothing in the tank that would be harrasing him, the only thing I have seen by him was the corydora, it was kind of like sucking on him and pushing him around, there are some tetras and some angel fish that stay near the top almost always, do you think U could give me some instructions for a moon light system?

Thanks,
Scott

BGK do not only come out at night.
Your tank needs to have a few hiding places such as caves, hollowed out driftwood.
You need heavy planting and a few floating plants.

True that bgk love to come out at night, but when your tank is appropriately decorated and they feel comfortable, they will be out at all times.

As far as feeding

bloodworms
brine shrimp
algae wafer
cichlid pellets
crab
shrimp
lobster
krill
peas

Feed at the same time as you feed your other fish...lights on or off, doesn't matter..a hungry bgk will come out and eat.

They do tend to be shy the first few days ,possibly weeks depending on the individual.

make sure your temp is around 80 and your bgk will love you :D
If you have something happen that requires a med, please remember BGK do not have scales and some meds can and will kill them.

He has finally came out again, this time i fed him right out of my hand so he must be feeling pretty darn comfortable,bt he still likes to go in his caves even at night so I think he is still kind of just adjusting.

They do love their hiding spots, when mine aren't out swimming that's where they are,you won't find them resting out in the open.

Glad to hear he's doing better for you :) Let me know if you have any other questions :)

As for the moonlight system,
I bought blue leds (light emitting diodes) online, 50 LEDs for about $8 after shipping.

I took an old phone charger and cut the cords. Phone chargers take the AC current from the wall and turn it into DC current, each one will have its specs on the boxy looking part that plugs it in. I then did a little maths and found the right resistors ($2 at radioshack), wired each LED with a resistor in series and all the LED/resistor pairs in parallel.

If you want more specifics pm me, or search online.

goodluck

Heres waht you do.

You go out, and buy 3-6'' clear PVC tubing. You cut a bunch of pieces for him. He will love hiding in there, and you can still see him. Ever wonder why they have this set up at pet stores? Its a great way to make your fish visable while providing him with the same security normal PVC offers.

Yeah I have my PVC pipe in there but he only uses it at night when he is swimming around he'll sit in them for a while, otherwise suring the day he dsoent, yesterday I bought some slate to make a cave for him, and the bluerams I am going ot be getting soon. Thanks for all the help you guys!
