i put together 3 -1 gallon tanks, each with 1 betta,2 cory catfish,1 otto. my sister has a sucessful little setup i imitated. i than set up my 10 gallon, learned about cycling water and much more. i took all the other fish out of my betta tanks and put in the big one after chemistry seemed ok. since then one betta has died from velvet, another ich. i pulled a dalmation guppy out of the big tank and put in hospital with a white spot on tail fin. i also removed a mickey mouse fish with what appears to be ich. my dilemma is that i treated the big tank with bettamax to contribute to the good health of Humble, our happy, friendly betta. i thought the guppy would benefit as well.now that there is ich,and possibly velvet in the tank i'm not sure on proper care, with bettamax in there as well. i don't want to O.D. the fish.

there is 1 dimond tetra,1 blue fin tetra,1 betta,2 frogs,5 catfish, 2 otto, 5 tiny tetra feeders (because my neons were dying)

Well first thing is you want to be sure your water parameters are good. Get your water tested. You can use Maracide to cure ich and/or velvet. I would suggest this product and follow the directions exactly on the box. Hope this helps.

:hi: to the board

should i medicate with the bettamax in there? should i finish bettamax treatment first or go directly to treating for velvet/ich? the symptomatic fish have been removed.nitrate 0-.25, ammonia 0, PH above 7.6 (still working on that i tried a few things, basically just waiting out the 6 weeks for new cycle, hopefully it will improve) THX for your reply!!!!!

Don't worry about the PH. That is fine. If it comes out of the tap at 7.6, its best to let the fish live in that water than to try to buffer it. This causes undue stress to the fish as it is impossibe to decrease the ph to exactly 7.0 every time. Fish will thrive given constant ph and good conditions. I would put activated carbon in your filter for a few hours. This will remove any medicine in the water. If you have removed the diseased fish, then give them the medicine in a quarantine tank. Make sure this tank has NO carbon in it or the filter. The maracide will work on your betta as well as the other fish.

how do i properly add carbon to the filter system? I have not been able to figure that out??? THX again for your help!!!!!!

Well do you have a filter that hangs on the back of the tank? If so, the cartridge you put in usually can be opened or already contains carbon. Its like a pouch made out of flossy material. Do you know the brand of filter you have?
