So the platies we have were labeled as Balloon platies in petsmart.
They do have that shape to them b/c the females and the male have that fat big stomach like balloon mollies have.

Anywho... I know it's said that when you get females from the store, they're more than likely already knocked up.
I'm just wondering how you can tell if they're a balloon, since they're already pretty darn big and all heh.
I'll try to get some pics of the females tomorrow. I know some of you livebearer experts will be able to tell if they are and how far they are into their fishy pregnancies! heh

OMG not another balloon :(

Oh well each to their own i guess. with ballons you cant tell if the pregnant, they just look fat all the time and then suddenly give birth.

About the shape the look squashed and much batter then normal. should be quite simple to tell from normal platies.

Oh.. well bleh... thanks for the info!

As for the balloon thing... I actually didn't even realize they were balloons. I just saw pretty blue color with the mickey mouse pattern and decided we wanted some :p
I usually don't like fish that have something like that bred into them.. like goldfish with big googly eyes and all that, but these lil platy have grown on me.

i don't know if this helps but here is when i had some ballon mollies the yellow one is the female which is pregnant may give you some idea :)

Wow! Do you have pics of balloon platies?

Our Pet Smart farther along has them too. They look exactly like blue mickey mouse platies with slightly larger bellies.
