At the moment my obsession with fish as new to the hobby and have managed to infect other people into getting fish! Most are being responsible and researching or asking me to look up on particular species.

One person I work with, happened to look into a local fish store and ended up buying a special deal which I cringed with when she told me but not being expert on goldfish don't know what to advise. The deal was a 12.99 deal that had teh container, food, gravel and 2 goldfish supplied. She bought one of these deals, I do not believe that it has a filter.

She had them about a week, one fish has now died and the water apparently went cloudy, the other fish was also subdued. She explained that she had put the remaining fish in a bowl and that she had scrubbed and cleaned the tank out entirely and probably was not going to put the fish back into the tank as she thought it might have a disease and she may get more.

I explained frequent water changes were essential, she didnt appear to know what a filter was so tried to explain. I also asked her to contact the store and explain about the dead fish as I wanted her to talk to someone "expert" as what I said quite gently did not appear to sink in.

I assumed filters are essential for all fish to have a good quality of life, am I wrong. I also had someone else I worked with talk to her as this lady had 4 massive sized grown fish that are about 15 years old to try and make reality hit home.

Have I done all I can? The only other thing I thought of is that if there was a simple beginner set out guide that I could print off for her for basic care on goldfish that had these facts perhaps that would also help?

Sorry to blab on, im really new to fish but have never liked anything to suffer.

aww its not your fault, it would have probably only bumped the price up to about 20 for the LFS to add a filter, goldies are huge waste producers and need huge tanks
why not show her the forum, it wont be her fault either, the fish shop should have advised better, i do belive shops like pets at home are now not selling any tanks without filtration, chucking goldfish in a bowl/tub has been the norm for years, its only when you come to places like the forum that you discover how bad doing so actually is :(
print her off the pages titled, fishless cycling and also find a thread where it states what minimum size goldies should be kept in ( maybe u can shock her into having a re-think)
but yes for most fish, filters are an essental bit of kit, goldies deffo fall into that catergory.
heres wishing you luck, can imagine you are feeling pretty frustrated at the moment, but you have done your best :)
shelagh xxxxx

Thanks for that! I think will spend a little time at work during lunch printing some info off and go from there :good:

Did you happen to get the size of the tank from her?

The cloudy water was the tank trying to cycle.

Yes I thought so...No didn't get the size but have seen the product on sale..probably about 12 litres (unless the tank is different). She has gone away with the articles to read (had basic care of goldfish, tank cycling and why important etc) but will now not see her for a couple of weeks as she has holiday. Apparently the other one has perked up, but this was probably due to some fresh water! Have tried to gently guide her..

Great! That's awesome that you gave her some articles.

I second the suggestion of showing her this site. There isn't much about goldfish care but goldfish are just like any tropical fish when it comes to cycling, tank space, filters, ect.

hmmm.... this is going to sound bad but she didnt buy the fish for the pleasure of them, they are not named and i got the impression they were just for the amusement of her grandchild when he occasioned. She did willingly take the articles though and will follow her up when she gets back...

I would offer to look after the fish if she wanted out but tbh wouldn't have the rght tank space for a growing large goldfish!
