my 6 in silver arowana has some tiny black specs on the membrane of his pectoral fins only. he looks like he has a white film on his tail fin and he is also just recovering from ick. does anyone know what those tiny black dots are? could it be black spot disease?

What are your water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.
How many gallons is the tank.
How many fish and which type.
Do you have snails in the tank?
Any white or red edging to tail.
Do fins stick together.
Any excess slime on fins.

Black Spot

Symptoms:

Your fish will have small black spots measuring about 2 millimeters in diameter. These can be found anywhere on the fish’s body and fins. Cysts may be found in the internal organs. It is typical for African Cichlids, however, to constantly have little black spots, especially around their mouths. These black spots should not be mistaken for "Black Spot." These are scabs, which have resulted from digging in the gravel or from fighting.

Cause:

Larvae of parasitic digenetic flukes, Cercaria and Metacercaria. The spots seen contain larval stages of digenetic flukes. The life cycle of these parasitic flukes begins when fish-eating birds and other animals ingest fish infected with the parasites. Once ingested the parasites mature in the intestines of the host animal where they produce eggs. The eggs are then deposited into the water where they hatch and infect the livers of aquatic snails. The parasites then develop into a second and then third larval stage before leaving the snail to seek out a fish host. This type of parasitic infestation is most common in wild caught fish and pond fish.

Treatment:

Remove all snails from the aquarium or pond to end the cycle of infection. Treatment is rarely necessary and can be difficult if not impossible. Minor infestations may clear without treatment as the larvae will eventually die and be absorbed by the host's immune responses. Copper Sulfate may be helpful in severe cases.

well the arowana is 4 1/2 inches i also have a 2 inch adonnis pleco and some feeder guppies. it is a 29 gallon tank. i do not have any snails in the tank but i recently bought some live plants and there were snails in the bag with the plants but i did not put them in the tank. the fins do not stick together but it looks like they have some excess slime on the tail, but it is not reddening at all. the arowana is just recovering from ick.

Why do people do this? An arowana and a Adonis in a 29G?

Lets be realistic here, the fish require a good deal more than what you are providing, which is being well and truly shown by the conditions of your aro,

Diseases like Ick aren''t hard to prevent and anyone capable of caring for an arowana properly wouldn't see this in their tanks.

that 125g will last the arowana 3 months before the tank will be too small, Oh but your not stupid so i guess you already knew this

haha no, baby arowanas grow 1 inch every month. he is 4 in 1/2 inches...if i put him in a 125 now, you wont even be able to find him in it there is so much room. and a 125 will last an arowana. fully grown they get 47 inches in captivity....its an arowana not a whale. the 125 will last. ????

the 125g wont last for a full grown one , depending on the arrowana you could get an 180g for life with i think is a 6'*2'*2' thats for the smaller ones. looking at various arrowana's they hit about 2ft for the smaller ones which obviously makes any 2ft wide tank a squeeze!

I work in an LFS that sells Silver Arowanas, If a good varied diet is given and water changes are kept to then yes a 5foot 125G tank will be no good after 3-4 months. Oscars grow an inch a month, arowanas grow a lot faster.

So you think a 4 foot arowana should be kept in a 5 foot tank?, yeah right

How would even a 2 foot arowana turn around in a 125G tank?

You need 180G for an asian or a Australian Arowana and they get nowhere near the size of a Silver or Black South American Aro, which actually need at least a 300G for life

so my 4 1/2 inch aro is gonna grow 47 inches in 3 months? and i have an oscar too. he doesnt grow an inch a month. he used to, but once he got 7 inches, his growth started to slow down.

I didn't say it would grow to 47" in 3 months, i simply said it would outgrow a 125G in 3 months, at that time i would expect the aro to be a good 18"+ which would mean an upgrade would be in order.

Don't just take my word for it though, post in the oddball or predatory section and i'm sure you will get the same response
