ok. My reading yest were as follows

PH 6.4
Nitrite 0.25
Ammonia 0
Nitrates between 0 and 5.0.

Have just took more readings. Now i have added plants today and some bogwood

these are

PH 6.0
Nitrite 0
Ammonia 0.25
Nitrate 5.0.

I have not fed fish since yest morning, and i done a 10- 15% water change around 10.am this morning. not sure whats going on????

Anyone got any idea's

would be much appreciated

Thanks

ah people mighty disagree with but aquraium salt lowers nitrates

As far as i am aware, salt lowers the toxity of nitrites, not the number of nitrates.scotslasszoe how long has your tank been set up and what is its fish stocking?

grimmy, aquarium salt has no effect on nitrates. It will reduce the toxicity of nitrite. Water changes are the simplest way to lower nitrates.

What fish and how many do you have in the tank? The leels you are showing aren't bad for a cycliing tank. Just continue to do water changes as needed to keep the ammonia and nitrite below .25ppm. The fact that your nitrates are rising is a good thing as that means that both ammonia and nitrite are being processed.

excuse us for grimmy, anyway salt has a lot more cons as well so i wouldnt use that to make it easier to the fish. Do you know the kh and gh of your water? And do you know the tds by any chance?

pH 6.0
Nitrite 0
Ammonia 0.25
Nitrate 5.0.

Note, your 'ammonia' test kit actually tests for ammonia (toxic) AND ammonium (safe): With a pH of 6.0 the actual levels of toxic ammonia indicated by your 'ammonia' test kit is actually 0.011% of the result, in other words 0.0000275ppm (assuming a tank temp of 24C) which is about a factor of 700 below that considered a deadly level of 0.02ppm, so that is fine for the fish IMO.

NitrIte is 0, so cool.
NirAte is 5, so not dangerous. Keep it below 40ppm, anything >100ppm, start to worry and do water changes or add plants.

I missed the 6.0 pH reading and only saw the 6.4. As Andy mentioned, the toxicity of ammonia drops as pH drops. Are you certain that your pH is 6.0 or is that as low as your test kit goes. At pH levels below 6.0, bacteria reproduction can slow or stop so that your tank won't ever cycle or will tak quite a while. It's true that the ammonia will not e a problem as it's in it's non-toxic form or ammonium but the nitrite would still be toxic. What is te pH of your tap water and have you had your GH and KH tested?

man, thers grimmy posting wrong info again.

Sorry mister perfect

Why don't you look back on some of your posts 8)
I understand what you are saying but I have to agree about grimmy. I'm sure he means well but his advice is bad. There is at least one more thread right now where he has suggest salt and a parasite medication because someone lost fish when they added new ones to an established tank. The problem is that he continues to give the same bad advice even after he has been told repeatedly that it isn't correct. In the case of this thread, he even prefaced his reply that some may not agree as he knew he had already been told different in another thread.

weve all said something wrong before, but most of us learn from our mistakes and forget about pride

grimmy... well ive learned never to listen to him since he will change his mind.

I think we may also have learned that not everyone is created 'equal': Grimmy has ADHD Attention Defecit Hyperactivity Disorder.

But in general, speaking to strangers across the internet, we all know what to make of any given advice in an open forum.

Andy

PS, Grimmy if I were you, I'd simply state you have ADHD & explain what that is / means, it would stop people attacking you all the time perhaps?

In no way am I backing Grimmy up (well maybe a little ;) ), or justifying his information, it's just afishdude has no right to be talking. Have you seen some of the stuff he's put up on the forum? I can say, it's been more then twice, and it's also been god awful.

ok i think we should stop... before someone gets banned, hurt, or whatever.

From what I understand, ADHD has nothing to do with posting in-accurate information. That is, why people are attacking him. I have known a few people with the disease, and it isn't like they can get answers to questions... Or, maybe I'm wrong?

Anyways, how do you know? :look:
