Okay,

My LFS has some archers, which I assume are Toxotes microlepis . Now I know from reading lots of NMonk's posts that these fish can live in a freshwater tank rather happily. However, the LFS store is keeping them in a brackish tank (no surprise right?). I only have a freshwater tank that I'd like them to be in. Is it possible to acclimate them from brackish to freshwater in a relatively short period of time (I.E. in the float bag)? Or should I just scratch the whole thing until I can get a transition tank after learning the SG of the store's tank.

Archers never do well long term in freshwater and while microlepis are found in freshwater in the wild in captivity they rarely do really well without just a bit of salt in the water to at least take a hydrometer off the 1.000 mark.

CFC,

Thanks for the heads up. My current tank is planted with a few Swords and a couple of Anubias (my first successful attempt at a planted tank). Won't adding salt kill them? Maybe this should go in a different forum. Or will the archers just tear them up anyway?

My microlepis is living in freshwater at the moment, and has been since I have had him. He is healthy and active, but his growth has been slower than expected, about 1" in a year or so.

The plants you mentioned should be fine up to 1.005. They can handle lower salinities.
