Jus bought myself a new betta (finally) and they had some apple snails so i got one of them too.

hes jus started moving after a couple of hours but he doesnt look right to me.

got a weird brown circle stuck to him and how come he makes the sand around him look weird?

not a great pic but you can kinda see...

is it normal?

The 'brown circle' is so that when they go back into their shell, the brown part covers the entrance so that nothing can get at them.

The sand around him gets stuck to their slime they have on them. I think that might be it?

My apple snail's shell looks like it has a hole in it and it's jagged. Is there something wrong with it? What should I do. She acts just fine.

The purpose of this slime trail is to trap floating detritus in it. The snail then retraces the trail and eat the stuff that got trapped in it's slime.

wow never thought of that.

They leave slime trails all over the place. The purpose of this slime trail is to trap floating detritus in it. The snail then retraces the trail and eat the stuff that got trapped in it's slime.

nice!!

yeah that looks pretty normal to me Sam, but test the ph of your water, can't remember if they like it hard/soft..... but if your water's similar to ours you might not have any luck with apple snails, ours melted :X :S :-(

yea hes been in the tank a while now and hes doing fine. really cool snail actually.

ill hav to check my PH tho like u say cos im not sure what it is.

Apple Snails are normally ok in most waters but they can be very sensitive if the tap-water in your area contains copper and/or other metals and the tank hasn't broken them down yet then it could die due to the snail-toxic substances in the water. If you see that the snails become completely inactive or if the snails, especially the little ones try to leave the water after a water change get something to treat the water like aquasafe.

yeah we struggled even with treated water so we knew thee were no heavy metals, the only thing we could find that they were sensitive to that could be a problem was ph.

Never had problem with the PH levels with any of my Apple Snails, but then their kept with Ramshorns and they need a PH7 so I keep the water at that level, but like said never had a problem with when they have been in other tanks when the PH has not been 7.

but I'm sure someone would be able to help you more if you post about your situation under the other pets section.

I might post this in the invertabrates section...other pets is more for mammals and what not.

About the calcium supplements...I've heard of using crushed oyster shell. There are quite a few other things that people use too.

Glad to hear the snail's fine, SamUk! :good: I hope you don't mind if I answer this question on your thread though...

My apple snail's shell looks like it has a hole in it and it's jagged. Is there something wrong with it? What should I do. She acts just fine.

Welcome to TFF!!! I'd assume that the hole was either a result of a calcium deficiency OR it fell and cracked its shell. Either way, calcium supplements help them fix their shells faster. I'm not quite familiar with calcium products myself, but I'm sure someone would be able to help you more if you post about your situation under the other pets section. :good:

hey no problem! were all hear to help.

i get paid tommorow so i think il buy a new PH tester and check it out.

The pet shop is far from here but I will go get some calcium drops if need be. I thought I'd just drop a Calcium supplement tablet in the bowl. It's Nature Made 500 mg. I dropped it in and it makes the water milky. Hopefully it will heal Penelope's shell. Penelope is my snail. I also thought about dropping some milk in the water. I'll let y'all know what happens.

wow your brave. I couldn't bring myself to add something like that without having some research to back up the move. I hope it works out for ya.
