I have my mixed dollar tank, that I pulled mature fish from various tanks into one tank, and I'm sure I have a male, and female "common" silver dollar in this group, and I'm temped to find a place for the 3 tiger dollars ( I adult, and 2 Juvenal ), as the male has really colored up lately, and him and the female seem to have a favorite spot in the tank, and are always side by side... if nothing destructive happens, I may leave the tigers there, until my large tank is ready for fish, then leave these 2 in this tank, or if they need more room, maybe move them with the others to the 250 gallon, when it's ready... I know most are farmed now days, just curious if anyone has bred them in an aquarium???

not a good picture of the male, but a picture of my pair..

there are many videos out there of them spawning, but in the few I've watched, I didn't see any fry...

a little better picture of my male, because they hang mostly under these roots, it's pretty shaded, so the color on the tail and dorsal is muted

but they are trying to keep the tigers away from "their" spot...

It so happens I've been reading some stuff on them for a friend's project. I have never kept them, but the basics on them is they are group spawners, like similar smaller fish. They aren't usually bred in pairs. It takes large tanks just for breeding, with the spawning group removed so the fry have a chance. Not many people breed them because the space demands for breeding tanks, and for day to day maintenance groups is difficult.

It's not the fish that's the problem, but the size of tanks (plural) needed.

I've been able to spawn some small tetras considered group spawners in pairs. Sometimes you get a group and have losses, and you have to work with smaller numbers. There's a cost - where a normal group spawn can give you good numbers of young, small group tetra spawning have given me small numbers of fry, and aren't as successful overall. Some species will breed almost on demand in groups, but in pairs often simply won't spawn or will have a lot of unfertilized eggs.
