So when I upgraded my tank to 75 gal about 6 months ago we bought a large beautiful piece of driftwood. We were told to cure it in our tank. Well we put the driftwood in and the next morning the tank was blood red, you couldnt' even see the fish. 6 months later we can now see our fish but still have a lot of red. I do weekly water changes so you would think it would be gone but it still there. I have run extra floss in there many times and yet still red. More of an orangy color now. Any tips?

i made that mistake too, just increased water changes and the carbon and it took about 10 days to sort

I had a similar problem with one piece of wood that I added. Activated Carbon did the job for me. :)

Yup, carbon should take care of it. The red is from tannins in the wood being released. It doesn't harm the fish, and is infact considered beneficial to fish from blackwater (Amazonian) regions. The "curing" you were told about is just letting the wood soak in water with frequent changes to dilute the tannins, best done in a bucket, not the tank. :good:
