I just got a 29 gallon tank and I want to put two or so angelfish in there. What other fish can I put in the tank. I know I can't put neons. Thanks.

Is a 29g big enough? angels get really large and really tall.
As for tank mates i would just put a catfish or two in there, somthing small though.

A lot of the folk here recomend at least 18 inches of water for the angelfish. My 29 gal is a wonderful tank but is only 12 inches high - however my thirty is 18 inches high. Which do you have?

ALASKA

They are lovely fish but you are right - the neons would be a bad idea in the end. :lol:

i got 2 little angels in a 29 gal (18 inches high :p ) with some gouramis, mollies and some silver sharks and a black ghost knife fish( i no i shouldnt have him in there and hes gettin a bigger home soon i promiose but hes soooo cool and he was the littlest one there)

I know several angelfish breeders that keep young angelfish pairs in a 10 gallon. But i don't recommend that, i'm just stating it can be done and without illfull effects.

Most angelfish breeders recommend at least a 20 gallon tank for angelfish. I got a 20 with 2 grown angels and everything is going great. They got plenty of space to swim around and so forth. I also got a 29 which is the same height but bigger. Now i do realize some angelfish do need a very high tank such as the veiltails but other angelfish probably do not.

As long as you give each angelfish 10 gallons of space and its at least a 20 gallon with no veiltail angelfish, your doing fine.

Now angelfish tankmates can be the large tetras (cardinals are big and look almost like neons, if you wanted neons), rams, corys and most friendly slow moving fish. But beware that once your angelfish grow about 6-12 months that when they reach sexual maturity that they will be very aggresive towards your other fish. Some fish can handle it like my rainbow but many fish it might stress out to much and you will have to seperate the 2 angelfish into their own tank.

To clarify the tank size issue:

29g = 30" long x 12" wide x 18" high

30g = 36" long x 12" wide x 16" high

30g (breeder) = 36" long x 18" wide x 12" high

I would only keep angels in the 29g and that is the barest minimum for one or two.

I'm not going to argue with you. If that what you want to do then fine but your wasting so much space unless their large vieltail angels. All you have to do is do a search on google for angelfish only forums and you will notice MANY breeders carry several 20 gallons for just angelfish pairs. In fact I can give you three main forums right now. Another thing, it sounds like the person is just getting young angels and you definately don't need that much room for young angels either.

Angelfish Breeder that gives exact gallons for each stage of the angelfish's life.

I had no intention of arguing with you. You expressed your opinion, I expressed mine. That's how the forum works.

My opinion (one shared by many knowledgable members here), is that for most fishkeepers (i.e. not professional breeders), a good rule of thumb for keeping angels is at least 18" of height and 29 gallons.

All my advice stems from the philosophy that fishkeeping isn't about cramming as many fish into a tank as possible. It is to have a stable, happy, and interesting group of fish that will live naturally in their new home for a long time.

I will stick by my opinion that a 12" high tank is inadequate for permanently housing a pet angel, regardless of how many gallons it is. At no point did EkizUCLA mention this is a grow out tank, so my advice was based on the assumption that it isn't.

EkizUCLA, I wish you luck, whatever you decide to keep in your tank. Please keep us updated on your progress! :thumbs:

They keep oscar pairs in 45g tanks once they have paired off. Why? why do they care about the fish? its there to make money and thats it nothing else..
Sure a angel will live in a 20g tank sure it will, but will it thrive? i think not..
Think of it like this, keep a dog tied to a fence for the rest of its life, yes its going to survive but will it thrive??

or the patience and the dedication, Your tank with Angels and discus will look very delicate, if u had a bigger tank maybe you could do it. What about tertra to school around the angels?
