I have two angels in my 20 gallon fish tank, don't worry they are still small and am currently looking for a bigger tank so don't even think about giving me a hard time about it.
Anyway, the bigger of the two, its upper fin (dorsal) is split, as well as its tail. It was stressed and clamped its tail fin up for a night. (I put some platys in and realized it was stressed so took them out asap). Would that cause its tail fin to be all raggedy and split? The other angel is the less agressive of the two so im not worried about it harassing the bigger one. Is it time to seriously buy a tank? It also hangs out at the top corner of the tank in the back, is that any sign of anything wrong?
Any info would help!
Thanks

Tank specs: 20 gallon, penguin filter, 2 small angels and 2 platys

What are your water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.
Split fins heal in good water quality but if the fins are uneaven and raggy you have bacterila finrot.

I know its a betta site but good info on finrot.

Ammonia levels are fine,
and nitrates are super high humm what could cause that? I haven't changed anything
I added some stress zyme we'll see how that changes the levels, i'll go have them checked tomorrow or Saturday

How high are your nitrates?
How often do you maintain the tank?
How long has the tank been set up?
When did you last maintain the filter?

Nitrates are around fifty. I clean the tank around once a month. The tanks been set up since Mid January.
The filter is going to be changed on Sunday. I'll change it today due to the circumstances

Need to be doing a 20% water change and gravel vac once a week.
When you say change the filter do you mean a new one.

So would there be any reason why I haven't had a problem for the last 8 months by not changing it weekly? (Just curious)
Yes put a new filter in.

Debris can build up in the substrate, remove ornaments and give it a good vac.
Don't forget to add your mature sponges to the new filter if you can.
Chop them to fit, or squeeze the old mature filter sponges onto the new ones, but soak the new sponges in tank water first.

I guess I'm just hesitant to do even a 20% water change and clean my tank because last time I did it, I did too good of a job and I had a HUGE algae bloom which wasn't fun.

Ok i'm changing the water now, Thanks for all the help we'll see if the conditions improve.

Your tank matured now so it need that maintance once a week or the fish will get ill like they are doing.

Angels are really prone to this, especially babies. The key is the water quality - their water has to be really good. If they don't improve when your water improves, then it may be the problem I had with mine, in which case I was recommended a treatment plan which worked wonders. I suspect this is all down to the water though, so try that first.
