When my tank finally settles down from a bacteria bloom, and the water changes come more infrequent. I would really love to stock 2 angel fish into my tank.

Angel fish are more expensive and I want to make sure i give them a healthy home with the right conditions.
My goal is:
0 nitrites
0 nitrates
0 ammonia
ph reading is at 7.8

I use tapwater from a well which is hard water, stress coat weekly, and cycle weekly. I have salt in my water right now...but im trying to wean it off since i heard nothing but bad things about salt if there isn't a need for it. I was using the salt to soften my water basically. So no more salt!!

Right now i just have 3 tetras, 1 cory catfish, 1 algae eater 4 inches long, so i have plenty of room for a few more fishies. :)

So if you have some experience with angel fish, I'm just curious on what your parimeters are of water qaulity.

My angels seemed to cope very well in my aquarium, mixed with columbian tetras, pair of kribs, three baby clowns (temporary residents) and a bulldog plec. Water conditions fluctuated a little, depending on how busy I was at work etc to keep up with water changes etc, but they never complained at all! I had to sell one on though (A gorgeous jet black one with bright red eyes) who grew to about 8" top to bottom, she is now for sale at £35 at my LFS, I bought her for £4 when she was a baby. My angels never ever seemed to be unhealthy, never any problems with them and grew very well. Did have three, but one got killed by my male krib (it got its self cornered in the breeding territory on a rock when they had fry, couldn't get out, and I couldn't get in there in time to stop it). Couldn't save the angel, so I was down to two. Now down to none!

What is the size of the tank? For angel fish it is important to had a tank that is at least 18" tall, 24" is ideal. Dont worry to much about nitrate, unless the tank is very heavily planted you will always have some level of nitrate in there. Most fish will cope fine in higher nitrate levels though (personally as long as they are under 40ppm i'm happy).

Assuming your tank is big enough and it is cycled then the best bt is to buy a group of small angels (6 is a good number). Eventually you will get at least one pair out of the group, at this stage you then want to take the others back to your lfs (make sure you work out a deal with your LFS before you buy them, you will most likely have to take a loss on them but is well worth it).

As long as you look after them (regular partial water changes, varied diet, etc) then they will eventually end up spawning.

Edit: oh yeah definetly stop using the salt. Dont worry too much about PH and water hardness. As long as it is kept stable then the angles will do fine.

Thank you for your input so far on this matter. I did forget to say i have a 30 gallon tank, probably big enough for 2 angels. I don't think i want to breed them, I just want them for decoration. :) I did plant 2 lilly plants in it this week, starting out as bulbs, 1 of them just sprouted did i understand correctly that plants raise nitrates? I guess it doesnt matter if it doesn't hurt the fish.

What is the height of the tank?

As Dave said plants help lower nitrates, floating plants make an effective back up filter but can grow out of control so need trimming back every so often.

Sure make me go dig out a tape measure..lol the tank is 24.5 inches tall and 24 inches wide and 12 inches deep.

My water is pH 7.7, GH 197, KH 108, TDS around 200. If you have well water use a water treatment that deals with heavy metals, Prime is one of the best ones out there, along with Aquasafe. Don't waste your money on cycle, it does nothing for your fish. Fresh water is important for angels, I rarely do water tests, but change at least 50% weekly. Angels like it warmer, 80F is the coolest I keep angel tanks, most are in the mid 80's. You should get more corys, they like to be in groups, 3 is the minimum, 5 is better. A standard 30 gallon is tall enough for angels, provided you don't load it with 5" of gravel.

The best way to get two compatable angels is to start with a group of at least 6, with the understanding with your lfs that you will be returning some potential breeder size angels in several months. When a pair forms return the rest of the angels, you will then have a compatable pair.

Fish do seem to be expensive in Wisconsin, from my experiences checking out shops in Milwaukee. They are 2/3 the price down here in Chicago.
