I followed the excellent advice given on here and sarahp came to the rescue with some mature filter media and lots of advice - fantastic lady! My levels are all now safe (nitrite now between 0.1 and 0.3) and I'm feeling a whole lot less worried about my poor fish. :D

The Pleco sadly died :( in those awful toxic levels I had before but fortunately no more fatalities. I feel much more clued up and am eternally grateful to this forum and Sarah for helping a newbie out! Great stuff and looking forward to much healthier fish keeping from now on! And two words for anyone else starting out -FISHLESS CYCLING - would have been so much easier although I understand the impatience of wanting to get fish atraightaway but if you can wait... do it! You and your fish will be saved a whole lot less stress and worry! :D

aaawwww shucks I'm all embarrassed now :p

Seriously - glad to help - glad it seems to have worked.

Shame about poor pleco :-( but tbh I'm not surprised - they really are quite delicate. The LFS shouldn't have sold it to you because they knew how new your tank was  but the ££'s would have meant more to 'em
