Someone advised me to use this product, and it is absolutely horrible. It suppose to remove nitrites, ammonia, nitrates, etc, but all it did was raise the ammonia and now my fish look nasty. I cannot believe what this has done. The first time this happenned I just figured the ammonia went up because I cleaned the filter media, but then I added Amquel+Plus and the ammonia jumped right off the chart! This is sick.

Amquel+ has a chemical that combines with ammonia and makes a harmless by-product. Now, it will, however, cause your water to test positive for quite a bit of ammonia, so be careful. Especially with tests that use Nessler reagents. This is in the product label, if you scan it quickly. I use it for my betta bowls to prevent ammonia poisoning since these tanks are changed out 2x a week anyways, so I don't cycle these. I don't use this for any of my cycled main tanks as it just slows the process down quite a bit and prevents the bacteria from using ammonia. It's not a bad product, but the person who advised you should have told you about the water tests.

Sorry your fish are nasty now, though my fish have never experienced any ill effects from me using it. A better product for you is Tetra-Aquasafe or just a conditioner that removes chlorine, chloramines, and heavy metals. When you clean your media in the future, just rinse it gently in aquarium water, don't over-clean, and only replace one portion of the media at a time. I have 3 sponges in my filters, and IF I replace it, which is rarely, I'll only replace one out of the three.

llj :D

Ok, so your saying that there is no actual ammonia, but it makes the test results say that? And it's still a decent product to use?

The fish didn't look that great, and were breathing heavier, but I may have been just jumping to conclusions because 5 minutes later they looked fine.

Sorry, forgot, Amquel+ also considerably reduces oxygen levels in your tank for a few hours after the dose. All you have to do is increase water circulation for a little. That's probably what your fish were experiencing then.

Ok, well that is certainly relieving that it is not a harmful product after all. Thank you.
