I've had a major ammonia problem and it has lead to lots of problems and fish death for me. The advice i was given was hourly 50% water changes to get the ammonia down, test an hour after changing the water and if the levels are still raised change again. This has got the levels down but i caught it too late and the damage was already done to my fish so i've been trying to play catch up ever since. You seem to have caught it fairly early.
I was also told to clean the substrate with a gravel vac when i did a water change.
Hope that helps some but i'm not the best person to advise you cos i'm still new at this myself.

Who suggested 50% water changes every hour.

How long has the tank been set up.

Hi I am relatively new my self but I will try to help you the best I can. I am assuming that your tank was fully cycled before you added your fish (judging by your numbers) and then you added the 5 neons. I think but can't be 100% sure that the addition of the 5 neons has caused a mini cycle. My other thought would be have you treated your tank with meds or changed any filter media? Eithor way I would say you are having a mini-cycle ... so treat as a cycle, complete water changes in order to keep your ammonia at or below 0.25 ppm (obviously as close to 0 as possible). I was advised to check your water if it is 0.25 or lower, recheck in roughly 12 hours (or earlier if you are worried). If your ammonia is above 0.25 then complete a water change (50%) repeat water stats 1 hour after water change if ammonia remains above 0.25 ppm complete another 50% water change, recheck in 1 hour and continue with that schedule untill it is below 0.25, but you definately want to check your water stats every 12 hours untill the mini-cycle is complete.

Like I said I am relatively new myself so I am simply going by what I have learned by reading other postings.

Hope that helps and good luck.

ok think maybe i got over it now. did a 50 change lastnite then tested on hour after and it was 0 then just tested tonight and its 0 again. hope i got over the worst and caught it in time. thanks

Glad water quality back to normal.

Its back! did a weekly water test last light before doing an 50% water change and ammonia was 0.25 befroe and after the water change. i cleaned gravel all over and it was quite mucky.i feed only once a day and make sure that excess food gets eaten. the plants appear to be losing a lot of leaves at the moment and so i make sure that i get them out. the plants in there are looking quite brown. my other stats are 40 on nitrate ph was 8.2 before water change and 7.8 after. nitrite is o just the ammonnia. whats happening. i will do another 50% later
